[For just a moment, it's not the female tribute from District Two for the Seventy-Fourth Hunger Games looking at the Journal. She's just a sixteen-year-old girl. A sixteen-year-old girl who is lost and alone in the world.

He knows Twelve. She could tell him everything. She could tell him about the two arrows, about the cut on her cheek. She could tell him about the impossible moment when Katniss -- when Twelve gave up. She could tell him about waking up terrified and sobbing last night, hunted by a nameless fear.

He isn't her mentor, but he's a mentor.

It's that thought that makes her create a filter.

But it doesn't last.

He knows her. He would never believe her that she'd been attacked first. If she tells him, he'll tell everyone. They'll take his word over hers, put her in danger. She can't trust hime. She can't trust anyone.

So, the Career returns.]

What I said. Or that's my best guess.

Something tore her apart.

[But he knows what no one else does.

He's seen her in the Arena. He saw her hold Twelve down, threaten to carve her up. He knows how brutal she is in a fight with her knives.]
