[It's a question that's been on Clove's mind.

Okay, she's had a lot of questions lately. Valentine's Day and that whole week... It wasn't unkind, but it made her think too much. There were too many uncertainies. The ones with Cato... She didn't feel like thinking about.

But Katniss. She can talk about some of that.]

What do you all do for a living, where you're from? Or what were you going to do? Does everyone in your area do it?

In Panem... your district says a lot about what your job will be. Not always, but probably. Like me... If I hadn't gone to the Games? I'd probably have been the foreman in a factory. Or an overseer of a quarry.

And what you do... When did you learn to do it? And from who?

Some of us prefer to learn how to live here.

I get that people would wanna do that. But how about like manga? Or video games? Or cooking? Do any of that?

I'm not very good at cooking, but Cato's getting better.

Who's Cato? Your roomie?

Yeah. He's from my district back in Panem, too.

Oh! So you're like old classmates or something?

Yeah. We went to the Academy together.

That's cool you got someone with you. Livin' with him, right?

Would be why I said he was my roommate, yeah.

Anyway! How about the two of you go to the Rec Center and try some stuff out there?

Like what?

Like games! There's pool and air hockey, and there's a Wii there! Some other systems too, not to mention movies and stuff.

[And Clove has almost no idea what any of that means.]

We'll be fine. We keep ourselves occupied.

You should still give it a shot. It's fun stuff down there. [Particularly because you answered his earlier fun question with survival training...]

What use do they have? Skills they teach?

[rashness]

I guess hand eye coordination or somethin' like that, but seriously, the main point there is to have fun. You do it to relax after you've done the training and work you were doin' that day. It's not like everyone can work every second of every day. Particularly here, where you don't really have to.

Why does everyone worry so much about fun and hobbies here? None of it's useful.

Of course it's useful. You make friends and enjoy yourself. Most people like both've those.

Allies are useful. Friends aren't, really.

[rashness]

Friends are so useful! Because friends you'd trusting and depending on more than "allies!"

I don't like depending on anyone but myself.

Not even your classmate?

I don't rely on him, and he doesn't rely on me. We're allies, but that's it. The moment we don't have a common goal, we'll go our separate ways.

Even if that puts us against each other.
