[It's a question that's been on Clove's mind.

Okay, she's had a lot of questions lately. Valentine's Day and that whole week... It wasn't unkind, but it made her think too much. There were too many uncertainies. The ones with Cato... She didn't feel like thinking about.

But Katniss. She can talk about some of that.]

What do you all do for a living, where you're from? Or what were you going to do? Does everyone in your area do it?

In Panem... your district says a lot about what your job will be. Not always, but probably. Like me... If I hadn't gone to the Games? I'd probably have been the foreman in a factory. Or an overseer of a quarry.

And what you do... When did you learn to do it? And from who?

Arrest them. Bring them to jail, so they can await trial.

[Tilts his head curiously.]

The fleet admiral Sakazuki.

I would be more surprised if you had. The pirates here don't talk about him since he killed one of their own.

Yes, I like it, but there's downsides too. I like working for justice, I hate my boss and most of the brass. One of them was a good friend, but he got edged out two years ago rather than becoming the fleet admiral which Sakazuki did instead. And my men are idiots, but I requested the base because someone needs to kick their asses into shape.

There's no mandatory minimum or limit. If a marine is good at his job, he's there for most of his life. Some retire peacefully, some just sign on until they have the finances for a more stable life doing something else.

There's someone I need to catch. After that, I don't know what the future holds.

[Thinks that over for a bit.] Not exactly. Some marines can leave fairly early on if they so choose, but officers are privy to a lot more secret information that could be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. If a marine doesn't choose for a quiet retirement then they're branded the same as a pirate and given a bounty.

There was an ex-rear admiral who did that. X Drake. He's in the same category as Trafalgar Law, Roronoa Zoro, and Monkey D. Luffy here. One of the "Supernova Rookies." But he chose to become a pirate, not retire. Monkey D. Garp chose to retire after Marineford, [Chose/was forced to... one of those.] but he continues to train marines. He's a special case in general though seeing as he's the Hero of the Marines.

It depends. I was stuck in Loguetown for years, but eventually I left. [Against orders.] During that time I sailed through a lot of different parts of the Grand Line, but during the battle of Marineford, every marine was called in to fight the Whitebeard Pirates. After that I'd proven myself enough to get stationed in the New World so I requested G-5. It's not a base most officers want to deal with so it was open enough.

There are a lot of restrictions on where we can and can't go. [He just... ignores them anyway.]
