Please comment here with questions, comments, and concerns regarding the way I portray Clove.

Critique is more than welcome, but it is best if offered with examples of what I'm doing wrong and suggestions on how to improve. I may not always agree and/or take the advice, but it will all be noted.

Character Name:
Clove
Canon:
The Hunger Games

Character Information & Samples
Canon Point:
After death
Background Information:
In Clove's world, one set long after the fall of the current world governments and in what was once North America, there is an annual "pageant" called the Hunger Games to remind the twelve districts of the time when they, along with the destroyed District Thirteen, tried to rebel against the Capitol. 13 was destroyed, and a treaty was signed. The annual Hunger Games require each district to submit (save for 'quarter quells,' markers of twenty five years when the rules change) one boy and one girl, no younger than twelve and no older than eighteen, to be sent to an arena. There, they fight to the death until a lone Victor is standing. The Games have been going on for seventy-three years, and Clove is a tribute in the seventy-fourth Games.

Each of the different districts has a specialty, and three of the districts are considered to be 'Career' districts as well. These districts are One, Two, and Four. These districts are allowed to train their tributes in combat, making them more likely to win the Games. In District Two, most tributes are eighteen, and they volunteer after being trained. Clove, however, is 16, which means she was likely not meant to go into the Games the year she did, but no one volunteered to take her place.
Personality:
- ruthless
Clove has been trained to have no mercy in the Games, and she lives up to it. When the blood bath begins for the supplies around the Cornucopia, Clove joins the fray without hesitation and cuts down several of her would-be opponents. She also celebrates the killing of a tribute foolish enough to light a fire the first night. Throughout the Games, Clove shows no remorse for anything she does.
- sadistic
When she corners Katniss during the 'Feast,' she not only threatens to carve up her face but also tells Katniss that Cato allowed her to be the one to kill Katniss as long as she made a good show out of it. She also brags (until it gets her in trouble) about being part of those who killed Rue, even though only Marvel was actually present. Clove clearly takes pleasure in the kill, but she shows a great fondness for prolonging it, obviously enjoying toying with Katniss when she has her at her mercy.
- cocky
Clove knows her skills, and she takes a great amount of pride in it. She shows off her ability to throw knives multiple times throughout the required few days of training in the Capitol. Once let out into the arena, she proves her skills. She also brags about the kills she has, including her supposed help in killing Rue.
- loyal
While Clove is in the Games to win, she also shows an amount of loyalty toward the other tribute from her district, Cato. The two remain allies throughout the entire contest, and it is their connection that helps prompt the 'rule change' of allowing two tributes from the same district to win. When she gets into trouble, Clove screams Cato's name repeatedly, genuinely expecting him to come to her aid, and she is rewarded by him answering. He doesn't, however, make it in time to save her.
- cunning
Clove shows resourcefulness and high intelligence on more than a few occasions. She suggests having helped kill Rue, which involved a net to catch the quick young girl. She also seems to be the architect of the scheme to kill Katniss outside the Cornucopia for the 'Feast.' Cato is hunting for Peeta while she takes care of Katniss.

29th Throw - [voice]

[The morning of the fourteenth -- after getting her fishing parties squared away -- Clove goes a decent way from the water to speak to the journal.]

Anyone seen Cato around?

We were supposed to meet up a couple different places after we'd gotten settled, but I haven't seen him around.

[Right. Supposed to be... New Feathers.]

Cato's... the guy I came with. Big, blond, pretty nasty scars on his face.

My husband.

Anyone sees him, tell him to get his ass home, okay? He's supposed to be cooking tonight.

[The rest of the day, she can be found around the small village. Catching fish, cleaning them, gutting them, preserving them. All around, doing what she can.

Around sundown, it'll set in. That Cato's not coming. That he's not here. That he hasn't contacted her in two weeks because... at some point... he stopped being able to. And she'd thought he just wanted his space. They'd both needed it.

When that becomes clear, she doesn't go home. And the forest around the lake is gone.

So she just sits by the river, late at night, fingering one of her knives. A poor lizard who wanders by? Gets the knife flicked at it. And the little kill gives her no satisfaction.]

Looks like we're a pretty big drain on this community.

[She's wary as she writes it. Most of the people who'll see this, she hopes, are from the same Luceti she is. But there's no guarantee.]

So I'm organizing a hunting party.

Anyone who doesn't know how to hunt and wants to learn? Meet me at six in the morning by the stable.

Those of us who do know how to hunt will pair you up with a buddy. We'll leave at six-thirty sharp.

Hunting'll be Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Fishing'll be Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.

[If there's one thing she learned in Luceti -- learned from Katniss -- it's how important these skills are.]

If we're going to strain these folks' resources? Least we can do is try to help.

27th Throw - [ written - private from Cato ]

[The arguing with Cato has been... difficult. So has trying to get her head on right. The last draft reminded her what she's good at, but it also reminded her that she's only good at that.

Doing a bit of cleaning and organizing? Meant she found a stuffed bear and picture she'd hidden a long time ago. A picture from the world in which she and Cato won the Games and were crowned co-Victors.

Where she had a baby girl.]

I always wanted kids.

That was my plan at the Academy, actually. Before the Reaping.

I was going to graduate, take over my dad's job as foreman of the marble quarry near our village, get married, and have kids. I always wanted at least two. A boy and a girl.

A couple shifts here gave me part of that.

I hadn't died in my world, and I had a daughter.

[A pause, and she writes a correction.]

We hadn't died. We had a daughter.

Just before I left my District, my mom found out she was pregnant. I went home that weekend to see my parents, and they were getting along better than ever. They actually seemed to like being around each other.

Maybe kids help.

[Maybe kids would help.]

26th Throw - [ voice ]

Two years is a pretty long time.

[Especially to someone who's supposed to be dead.

It comes and goes, in a way. Sometimes, she's absolutely shocked to wake up every morning. Others, she's used to it. She goes to bed expecting to wake up.

She's gotten married.

That was something all hope of had died the day she heard her name called for the Reaping. Then, that hope had blazed alive again when the announcement in the Games had come. It shattered again at the hands of Thresh.

But here she was. Three months away from having been married for a year.

She didn't know how to talk about it, where to start. If she even wanted to talk about it. But she wanted, at least, to acknowledge it.]

It's time I shouldn't have had.

All of this still doesn't seem real sometimes.

25th Throw - [ voice ]

[Things are weird.

The fighting helped her mood. She feels calmer now, more sure of herself. A year without combat had left her a little disoriented.

But Cato had died. Died and come back. Not in a week but in hours. According to him and what she could figure out.

It wasn't that upsetting. Death was a part of their lives. It was just unsettling. Because it wasn't like death where she was from.

So? She'd gotten up to go hunting. And waited for hours while no one came.

Finally, she went to the house.

Less than an hour later, she makes one simple remark to the Journal.]

Katniss Everdeen is gone.

[Which sets her on edge more than anything else has in a year.

Itks the first time, she only half realizes, she's lost a friend.]

24th Throw - [ written ]

Something is definitely wrong with Cato. Like wrong wrong.

[She's writing. Because he's in the next room, and she's not going to give herself away by complaining out loud.]

He's been acting weird every time I go to the lake. And he's been coming home with a lot of bruises and stuff.

But, of course, typical idiot guy. I ask him what's wrong, and he tells me it's nothing. I mean, I get it. I don't need to know everything he's doing, but if he's getting hurt, I kind of think I deserve to know about it.

So. Anyone here know what's up? I figure someone knows something.

Or if you don't know what-- How do I make him tell me?

23rd Throw - [ voice ]

[After two days of the girl not showing up for lessons and not giving her any warning, Clove went looking. A brief discussion with Twelve, and, well, that was enough.

Of the things left behind, she'd claimed the stiletto she'd helped Rue pick out.

Maybe, in the long run, it was better this way. She'd never had to really use it. She'd never had to put the training Clove had tried to give her to use.

Later in the afternoon, Clove addresses the journal.]

Looks like the Little Bird has gone back to the nest. [A nickname for everyone. Something to make them less than human in the Arena.] The kid, Rue, she's not here with us anymore.

["She went home" would be a lie. For Rue, for her, for Cato... There's no home to go to. There's only death.]

This place really has its moods, doesn't it? Sometimes just sends a lot of 'em away at once.

22nd Throw - [ voice ]

There are some things you just can't teach. Not after a certain point.

[She doesn't sound frustrated or upset. Just... interested, in a way.]

It's weird, in a way. Trying to teach someone to be like me and finding out that's not possible. I mean, we're doing good. Great student.

[For Rue's sake more than anything, she's not going to name her over the journals, not going to divulge what they're doing.]

But there's just something different. How we were brought up. You can't teach that.

Which I guess is why they start us young. Start training us when we're five, where I'm from. Parents who think their kids have potential agree to send them off to the Academy, where they'll only see them maybe every weekend.

Usually less than that.

From there, they weed out the undesirable. The weak, the emotional, the nervous. Every year, there are fewer students your age. By the time we're sixteen or seventeen, there's only the best left.

At that point, only the girls who are stupid enough to get pregnant get sent away.

I guess I never really thought about it, but trying to teach someone else what I grew up with? You realize that some things just can't be taught. Not after a certain point.

21st Throw - [ voice ]

It's weird, realizing something you're used to is gone.

[And that could be taken wrong, so she's quick to add on:]

Not Cato. He's still here. And, I mean, so are the dreams. But they're not as bad. For either of us.

I realized it this morning.

I mean, it's not a big deal, and it's a good thing, but it's still weird. I'm so used to it now -- waking up in the middle of the night, going for a run, going into the woods. Or waking up because Cato's getting up for a walk.

I've gotten to the point where if he wakes me up? I can just roll over and go back to sleep. He does the same thing if I wake him up.

It's just... weird. Realizing we both slept the whole night last night.

[Portia had warned her before she went into the Games that if she came out, it'd be bad. That she'd be there, even if she had to kill Cato. That she could always come over if things were bad. Clove hadn't understood at the time, but she did now. And, sure enough, like Portia had promised, the effects got manageable after time. Especially with someone close by to make it better. She hadn't thought it would.]

It's getting better. I kind of figured it never would, actually.

20th Throw - [ voice ]

[Clove is coming to the clearer and clearer realization that she does not know what she's doing in regards to all this.

But that doesn't change that she's capable of doing it. Not as grandly as some people have talked about it being, but these things were always really simple at home, so she's keeping it that way.]

Hello everyone. This is Clove.

I just wanted to remind everyone and tell anyone who didn't hear the first time that on October 23rd at about... five o'clock in the evening or so... Cato and I will be hosting a dinner.

If the weather's okay, it'll be by the western lake. If it's too cold or raining or something, it'll be on the first floor of CH2.

We're getting married that day, and the dinner is for everyone in the community. You don't have to know us to come or anything. Just... anyone who wants something to eat is welcome.

[...Yeah. That'll do. Maybe she even sounded less awakward to other people than she did in her own head.]

19th Throw - [ voice ]

Okay.

[She's decided that saying it to the village at large is a better idea than writing it. This way, she can't change her mind a hundred times then put it off and either not do it or totally rush it.]

I... don't know the customs around here, so I'm just going to announce it.

For anyone hearing this who doesn't know me-- my name's Clove.

Um. In a little while. On the twenty-third of October, actually. Cato and I are getting married.

I don't know how weddings work here or where you're all from. I know things can be pretty different. Where we're from -- District Two of Panem -- the wedding itself is a pretty quiet thing. Little ceremony, short vows. That being said, we do need someone to officiate. I don't know who that would be, here. If someone could help with that... I'd appreciate it. A lot. I know someone mentioned it a little while ago. So, yeah. That'd really help.

After the ceremony, we have a meal. Where I'm from, it's a big thing, but it's casual. We'll have lots of food and anyone who wants to come is invited. If you know us, if you don't, whatever. Everyone is welcome. Come, eat, mingle. Really, it's as simple as that.

So. Yeah. Thank you for your time.

[And for the opportunity to make this announcement.]

18th Throw - [ voice ]

I think the weirdest part about being here -- the part I'm never really going to get used to -- is having time.

[There's no Career act today, so Clove doesn't bother with the video. She doesn't want to have to smile when she feels... weird.

Not good, not bad. Just weird.

It's what happens, she's pretty sure, when she thinks too much.]

I didn't get that where I was from. In the Academy, the days were scheduled. Even when we didn't have classes -- like when we'd sometimes go home for the weekend -- I sort of just... kept that schedule. I didn't know what else to do. I even still sort of do.

But... here... we've got time.

Maybe a little, maybe a lot. But it's time.

[She's rambling, and she knows it, but the thought's been weighing on her for awhile. It's something that keeps getting stirred up every time she thinks it's gone.]

So. Let's say there's something you wanted to do where you came from. You know you can't go back; you'll never get to do it there.

Would you... do it here? Because you can and because you have the time to do it.

17th Throw - [ video ]

Hello everyone.

[The Journal camera is on, and Clove is smiling. She's dressed nicely but casually. She nervously tucks a strand of loose hair behind her ear as she takes a few seconds to get out the next part of what she has to say. She glances away, unsure, then looks back at the camera.]

I want to apologize.

I've... made a pretty bad impression. I don't expect to undo the harm I've done, but I'm still sorry.

I wanto explain, just a little. I've been doing research lately, and I read about men called gladiators, who fought to the death for sport. I... I guess you could say I was raised to be a gladiator.

It's hard, not thinking like that. If I've... acted cold or ruthless, it's because I'm having a hard time learning not everyone's out to kill me in the end. I know I've been rude about it, and I'm sorry.

Forthose who've offered me friendship, I would be grateful for another chance at accepting it.

Again: I am so sorry. I hope I can earn what forgiveness there is to be had.

[The feed goes off.

And the act ends.

Clove glares at the Journal, a sour taste in her mouth. Three people in Luceti will recognize the girl they just saw. Cato, Twelve, and Twelve's representative will see the young woman from District Two sitting with Caesar Flickerman, her smile meant to endear her to all of Panem. Not the sexual create One presented, but something sweet. With just a little bit of a competitive edge.

Everyone else... Well. They can see what they'd like. Knowing most of them and their overbearing sense of morality? They'll think she's come around, they'll want to laud their superiority in having known all along she'd be better off thinking like them and how nice it is she's come around.

Let them think that. When the time comes, she'll still be just as capable. Just as detached from all of them. And they'll be compromised.

She can play that game.]

16th Throw - [ written / action ]

[Written:]

I want to work for the Malnosso. [It's written because she wants to say it, but she doesn't trust her voice.]

I want to be out of this enclosure, working for them. Especially on the battlefield. If they'd just let me, my knives are theirs.

I hate this waiting. Hate it. Sure, time to heal after the fight. Time to rest. But I know how this goes. How long it'll be before I have a knife in my hand for anything other than hunting. Before I get to really fight again.

I hate it.

Why can we just sign up? Go into battle and let that be that. Leave us there, provide supplies, die and come back again and again. I'm useful in a fight. Sitting around here? It's pointless.

[Action:

Clove hasn't spent much time at the apartment. She's been holed up at the camp she established when she first came.

Tonight, for the first time since she got back, there's a fire. Plenty of kindling and proper logs, but also... ball and oval-like bits of wood being thrown in.

All the carving she'd done when Cato had been worrying about her? It's all going into the fire now. Burning.

It was stupid to do it. To pretend she could have something other than battle. She knows now, better than she did before maybe-- that's all she's good for.]

15th Throw - [ written ]

[It's a question that's been on Clove's mind.

Okay, she's had a lot of questions lately. Valentine's Day and that whole week... It wasn't unkind, but it made her think too much. There were too many uncertainies. The ones with Cato... She didn't feel like thinking about.

But Katniss. She can talk about some of that.]

What do you all do for a living, where you're from? Or what were you going to do? Does everyone in your area do it?

In Panem... your district says a lot about what your job will be. Not always, but probably. Like me... If I hadn't gone to the Games? I'd probably have been the foreman in a factory. Or an overseer of a quarry.

And what you do... When did you learn to do it? And from who?
